No. Engineered stone is not banned in New Zealand. New Zealand has regulated the workplace rather than the product. WorkSafe New Zealand states that businesses working with engineered stone must manage the risks and have effective controls in place, and it lowered the workplace exposure standard for respirable crystalline silica to 0.025 mg/m³ in November 2023. WorkSafe also confirms it is supporting the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to develop options for regulatory intervention, so the position is under review rather than settled.
The mechanism explains why the regulation targets fabricators and not homeowners. The silica hazard is created when the slab is cut, ground and polished, not when it sits installed in a kitchen. An installed engineered stone benchtop is inert. Exposure occurs in the fabrication workshop and, to a lesser extent, on site when a cut-out is trimmed. The risk sits with the people doing the cutting.
Engineered stone remains legally available in New Zealand, and a fabricator quoting it is not doing anything improper.
The question worth asking is how they control silica dust — wet cutting, on-tool extraction, respiratory protection and air monitoring are the recognised controls.
